In October GPs received 31 million phone calls – more than a million each working day

Despite how we may feel about GP access, millions of appointments are still being delivered in general practice every week, with a record 39 million in October 2025.

All practices now provide access to online services for managing everyday admin tasks.  Using this service really does help keep the lines open for those with new or urgent medical requests – which in turn, helps you to get an appointment with your Doctor when you really need one. 

And the figures speak for themselves  

8 million online requests were managed in October and around 1 in 3 of these were for non-clinical reasons such as admin and repeat prescriptions. 

Without people learning how to self manage their own everyday admin requests via their patient portal – these additional calls could overwhelm our doctors surgeries and definitely make it harder for you to get through to your GP when you do have something more urgent.
