Further into Wensleydale, beyond Leyburn, sits one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the country. Bolton Castle sits in a commanding position, overlooking the surrounding countryside. The castle construction dates from 1378 and took around 18 years to build. Intended as a fortified residence rather than base of armies, its most famous resident was Mary Queen of Scots who was held in custody there in 1568. Today, a visit to Bolton Castle offers an insight into life in the Medieval period for all the family, with falconry displays, a chance to try archery, regular historical re-enactments and private tours of the medieval gardens.
