Families visiting Ripon this summer are in for a magical surprise, as 10 colourful Alebrije creatures emerge from enchanted seed pods across the city – all brought to life through augmented reality (AR).

Running from 19th July to 31st August, the Alebrije AR Trail is a free, interactive experience designed by Ripon BID in partnership with High Street Safari. It’s the first trail of its kind in Ripon, blending art, storytelling, and technology to create an unforgettable family adventure.

Using just a smartphone, visitors can scan contactless QR codes in shop windows to reveal fantastical creatures inspired by Mexican folk art. Children and adults alike will enjoy spotting the decorated seed pods, unlocking magical AR animations, taking selfies and videos, and learning about each Alebrije’s story. See how it works:

 

“The idea behind the event is to encourage families to visit the city centre with a safe, engaging and imaginative experience,” said a spokesperson for Ripon BID. “It’s also a great way to explore hidden corners of Ripon and discover what local businesses have to offer.”

The trail starts at Specsavers in Ripon Market Place but can be completed in any order and over multiple visits. It takes around 45 minutes in total and includes 10 AR creatures and 6 additional 2D characters. At the end of the trail, families receive a free children’s e-book that wraps up the Alebrije story.
