New ‘Shop Like a Local’ Pre-Order Service to Launch in September
27 Aug 2025
Did you know that every £10 spent on our High Street is worth £25 to the local economy? And with over 95% of Masham’s shops owned and run by local people, supporting these businesses directly helps sustain jobs and services in our community.
To make it easier for people to shop local, Masham Futures Community Partnership is set to launch a new ‘Shop Like a Local’ Pre-Order Service at the end of September.
What is the Pre-Order Service?
This new initiative will allow visitors and locals to pre-order a selection of hand-selected groceries and pick them up when they arrive in town.
It’s designed to save time and encourage more people to shop with our independent retailers and keep money circulating in town, rather than them heading straight to a larger supermarket.
Locals will also be able to use the service to order their favourite products in advance!
Discover Local Shops with the ‘Shop Like a Local’ Brochure
If you’re new to shopping locally in Masham – or you just want to know more about what’s on offer – check out the new ‘Shop Like a Local’ brochure for some great insights. Delivered to businesses and residents around town, the brochure features recommendations from local shopkeepers, insights into their most peculier™ products and tips on hidden gems you might not have discovered yet.
Haven’t yet got a copy? Grab one from the Community Office when you’re next passing.
Why Is This Important?
“We’re incredibly proud of the independent shops here in Masham,” says Ian Johnson, Chair of Masham Council, and star of Channel 4’s Our Yorkshire Shop. “We don’t know of any other town streets who have come together to provide a centralised booking process that makes discovering and buying locally sourced, made and grown produce so easy for visitors.”
A pilot version of the Pre-Order Service will start in September, with plans to expand it if the initiative proves successful in bringing more foot traffic and business to local shops.
The September Challenge: Spend £10 a Week
To get the scheme off to a great start, we’re encouraging both residents and visitors to take part in the September Challenge. All we ask is that you try to spend £10 per week at local shops over the next month wherever possible. It’s a simple way to show your support for Masham’s independent businesses and help keep jobs and services in town. Please get involved if you can!
The Peculier™ Shop Local initiative is part of the Masham High Street Project, funded by the York & North Yorkshire Combined Authority Lord Mayor’s Vibrant & Sustainable High Street Project which aims to revitalise the high street, draw more visitors and celebrate Masham’s unique heritage.
