Swinton Bivouac: New Access the Dales Hub & Tramper to Hire

18 Aug 2025

A brand-new Access the Dales hub has officially opened at Swinton Bivouac, bringing new opportunities for visitors of all abilities to enjoy one of Nidderdale’s most enchanting walks.

Thanks to the generosity of Open Country and the partnership with the Nidderdale National Landscape, an all-terrain Tramper wheelchair is now available to borrow, offering inclusive access to the woodland paths that lead to the Druid’s Temple.

The Druid’s Temple, built in the late 18th century by William Danby, is a dramatic folly resembling Stonehenge. Once constructed as a public works project, it now stands as an atmospheric site steeped in history and folklore. Visitors can wander among its towering stones, altars and hidden chambers, all set within tranquil woodland.

With the Tramper in place, the scenic circular route from Swinton Bivouac—previously more challenging for some—is now open to everyone. The trail weaves through peaceful woodland and culminates at both the Temple and a stunning viewpoint overlooking the Yorkshire Dales.

The hub is fully equipped to make a day out comfortable and welcoming:

  • Disabled parking at Swinton Bivouac
  • Accessible toilets inside the café
  • Wheelchair-accessible café to enjoy refreshments after your walk
  • Dog-friendly paths (with pets kept under control)

Reserve the tramper online or learn more about the project here.

Address: Swinton Bivouac, Masham, Ilton, Ripon HG4 4JZ.
