The Bowes Museum is located in Barnard Castle in County Durham. It’s a really quick journey of around 45 mins and its definitely worth a visit. The stunning building which resembles a grand chateau, comes as quite a surprise when you approach the town. It stands proudly in its surrounding formal gardens, in contrast to the stunning landscape around it. It houses internationally significant collections of fine and decorative arts, hosts important contemporary exhibitions and events and its prized 18th-century Silver Swan automaton exhibit still attracts the crowds! The museum is free and has a wonderful cafe.
