To mark National Swift Awareness Week, Mashamshire Swift Conservation Community Project are sharing their top tips for what to do if you find a ground swift!

A grounded swift always needs help. Swifts never normally land and cannot get airborne again. Below are actions to take if you find one:

• Don’t throw it in the air, this could increase any injury.
• Don’t try to feed it, swifts can only digest small flying insects.
• Place the swift in a ventilated cardboard box – a shoe box with small airholes, lined with a towel or kitchen rol
• Bring the swift into a quiet, warm, safe and calm environment, away from pets. Keep the box out of direct sunlight and away from any disturbance.
• Gently offer it water by running a wetted cotton bud around the edge of its beak, avoiding the nostrils

The project team will also have a Swift Stall at Masham Market on Saturday 5th July 2025, from 9.30am until 3pm. Stop by for a chat and to see videos of the baby swifts being fed by their parents in the tower of St Mary’s Church in Masham. You can also buy swift boxes and sound systems to attract them to your property.
