The Nolon Stacey Gallery is next to the Church, tucked away behind Johnny Bagdad’s Cafe. It is certainly worth seeking out. Nolon can often be found in the gallery, and his graphite and charcoal drawings are stunning.

The Unique Bowes Museum - Bernard Castle

The magnificent Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle was created by philanthropists Joséphine and John Bowes, for the benefit of the local people of Teesdale.

The museum is built in the style of a French chateau and sits in 22 acres of parkland, woodland walks and French-style formal gardens. It houses more than 50,000 items, including art, fashion, design, furniture, ceramics, silver, metals, and sculpture.

The jewel in the Museum’s crown is its iconic 250-year-old silver swan automaton, with over 2,000 moving parts, it still performs every day at 2.00pm. The Bowes also boasts a great café.
