Masham's Peculier™ Guided History Tour, Masham

We invite you to stroll through the stories, characters and moments that have shaped our remarkable town…

From Saxon saints to Victorian ambition, civic oddities to wartime resilience.  As we uncover the tales carved in stone, brewed in barrels and whispered through winding lanes, you’ll see how Masham’s peculier past lives on beneath every step.

The walking trail is available to do self-guided, with highlights pointed out.  However, the Peculier Guided History Tour will take you deeper and provide entertainment – tours typically take between 1 and 1.5 hours.

Our guides are local volunteers and revenue goes to local charities.

Check out available dates and times below.

Self Guided Walks Around Masham

We have self guided walks around and about Masham.  Follow the walks on screen using the map above or download trails if you have a GPX app.

Alternatively, if you prefer, printed maps are available at Mashamshire Community Office visitor info point.

Creative Legends

Who would have thought that such a small town in Wensleydale could have been the inspiration for so many artists and the location for so many films over the decades?  Follow our Creative Legends Trail and see if you can spot the Blue Plaques that denote the place where legends once stayed.

Masham Swift Trail

An easy, short and accessible walk to locate the sculptures celebrating swifts, iconic birds to Masham, created by 10 Yorkshire artists.  The trail takes you to the locations where you can enjoy the artists work.  Graham Coe compiled the orig Swifts Trail Guide and has kindly allowed us to use his photography for the sculptures and their locations.

Masham Leaves Walk

If you want to explore the countryside immediately around town, the Leaves walk is slightly longer, over footpaths and fields. It is a three mile, easy-going, circular, walk, circling town and punctuated by a series of oak leaf sculptures. Each sculpture is hewn from the stone slabs that once formed the platform at Masham Railway Station.

If you prefer you can always pick up a printed walk from Mashamshire Community Office where you’ll find a selection to choose from.

Masham’s Peculier History Walk

The route of the Peculier History Tour is also available as a self guided walk.  If you prefer to do it under your own steam you can follow and download the walk from the map above.  It takes in all the peculier places but, without the added stories and commentary of our peculier guides!
