…from Simon Theakston…
How did you come to run the business?
Theakston was founded by my great-great-grandfather in 1827. I am part of the fifth generation to take the reins. Brewing is in our blood—along with a deep responsibility to our craft, our community, and our customers.
Top sellers:
Top sellers include Old Peculier bottles and gift packs, our Spirit of Old Peculier—a smooth spirit distilled from our famous ale— plus preserves, fruitcake, and the famous backward-running Peculier Time clock, to name just a few!
What makes your business special ?
It’s not just a shop – it’s part of the full Theakston experience. After your brewery tour and tasting, you can wander straight into the gift shop and take home something Peculier.
What makes Masham peculier?
It’s small but mighty – a town full of charm, character, and centuries of tradition. At its heart is Theakston Brewery, where our beer has been brewed for nearly 200 years and where one of the last remaining Brewery Coopers still crafts and repairs oak casks by hand.
Famous customers:
We’ve had a few celebrities pop in over the years – including TV chefs, actors, and writers. But it’s the locals and regulars who bring the most stories and character.
Favourite place:
Our Black Bull in Paradise Taproom is hard to beat for atmosphere, but I’ve got a soft spot for the brewery early in the morning – the smell of malt in the air and the sense of history all around.
Insider tip:
Make a day of your visit to Masham – start with a stroll around the market square, enjoy a coffee, browse the local galleries and shops, then head to the brewery in the afternoon for a tour and beer tasting.
