Warning: Winter Fuel Text Scam Targeting Pensioners

3 Sep 2025

Local residents are being warned about a scam where fraudsters try to trick pensioners into giving away personal and bank details.

The scam works by sending a text message claiming you need to apply for your Winter Fuel Payment. The message includes a link to a fake website with an application form that asks for sensitive information, including bank details.

Please be aware: Winter Fuel Payments are made automatically. You do not need to apply and there are no official text messages or application forms involved. Any message suggesting otherwise is fraudulent.

If you receive one of these texts, the safest thing to do is:

  • Do not click on any links or reply.
  • Delete the message and block the sender.
  • If you think you may have already responded: stop all contact immediately. Call your bank directly using the number on your bank card or dial the secure 159 hotline to be connected safely.
  • Report the scam to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or online at actionfraud.police.uk

You can also get free, confidential advice from Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133.

Stay alert — and let friends, family and neighbours know so they don’t get caught out.
