Meet Santa’s Reindeer

If you’re not quite feeling the spirit of Christmas just yet – then why not take a short stroll around the back of St Mary’s church in Masham to visit the North Yorkshire Reindeer enclosure.

Seeing these majestic animals up close, you can truly understand why they are often seen as a symbol of ‘transformation’ as well as being an important part of the Christmas story. Thorp Perrow Enchanted Woodland

Wander through the enchanting woods to a cosy cabin where elves welcome you to a magical winter wonderland. Explore seasonal landscapes, miniature worlds, and the elves’ charming bedroom before meeting Santa in his cosy sitting room.

If you prefer, you can just take a stroll around the tranquil Arboretum, take one of the fun trails, visit the adventure playground with the kids, enjoy the wonderful Bird of Prey displays, or hand feed the wallabies in the Mammal Centre.

Fountains Abbey’s Timeless Traditions

Follow the clues to find the toymaker’s stations or take part in a toymaker’s workshop to make your own wooden toy. Visit the hall dressed in its best and stuffed full of nutcrackers and Victorian splendour.

Join in with carols around the Christmas tree or candlelight in St Mary’s Church. And as the light starts to fade, walk through the rainbow colours of the illuminations amidst these ancient abbey ruins.

Follow the Star – to Limetree

Just like the Maji, you can follow the star, not to Bethlehem, but to Lime Tree Observatory and explore the possible origins of this phenomenon which is both a symbol of hope and intrinsically connected to Xmas.

Lime Tree Observatory is in The Nidderdale designated ‘Dark Sky’ areas. The newly installed immersive planetarium theatre ensures a fantastic view of the universe whatever the weather.

 

Luminescence at Swinton Estate

Immerse yourself in a magical woodland and lakeside landscape this winter with Luminescence – A Winter Light Trail.

Set amidst the heritage gardens of Swinton Park Hotel, you will be transported to an ethereal illuminated experience depicting the magic of the natural world through an extensive light installation and using the beauty of Mother Nature as the inspiration for the various tableaux around the mile-long trail.

Sparkling Panorama of Hackfall Woods

Just outside Masham, discover the fantastic follies, deep ravines and natural panorama’s of this ancient woodland. Visit during winter and if you’re lucky you will find a sprinkling of snow or a glisten of morning frost to add that little bit of extra magic…

Explore the follies scattered around the 200 acre ancient woodland, spot a King Fisher gliding over the River Ure, or wild deer foraging the upper reaches of the woodland. A muse for many local photographer and the famous Turners’ view back to Masham Church along the River.

Next, arrive back in town, choose a cosy pub or cafe, settle in and order up those well deserved treats. Where muddy boots and dripping dogs are always greeted with a warm welcome!
