Further to his previous update, local MP Sir Julian Smith has highlighted the Employment Rights Bill which is currently progressing through Parliament. The Bill proposes a range of changes to employment law that could impact businesses in our area.
Key proposals include:
- Ending zero-hours contracts
- Reforming dismissal rules – making unfair dismissal a day-one right for employees and introducing a new statutory probation period
- Lowering thresholds for triggering collective bargaining and strike action
- Shortening notice periods for industrial action
- Introducing new redundancy protections, including thresholds for consultation and notification
- Changing statutory sick pay by removing the lower earnings limit and waiting period
- Strengthening protections against workplace harassment and enhancing consultation on tipping policies
These reforms may affect how businesses manage staffing, contracts and workplace policies. Business owners are encouraged to review the proposals and consider how they might prepare for the upcoming changes.
