Anti-social behaviour (ASB) continues to be one of the top concerns raised by Neighbourhood Watch members across North Yorkshire — and for good reason. It can damage community spirit, affect wellbeing and impact individuals and businesses alike.
With over 500 towns across the country seeing increased police presence and tougher enforcement this summer, now is the time to understand what ASB is and how you can help tackle it.
What is anti-social behaviour?
- ASB is behaviour that causes harassment, alarm, or distress. It generally falls into two categories:
- Community ASB – Disruptive behaviour in public spaces, including:
- Aggressive begging, public disorder, or misuse of public areas
- Graffiti, vandalism, or squatting
- Public urination or drug-related litter
- Unauthorised street drinking
Commercial ASB – behaviour affecting local businesses:
- Threats or abuse towards staff or customers
- Vandalism or repeated disruption that harms trade
What you can do
1. Keep Calm and Communicate – Try to resolve minor issues with neighbours calmly. Open conversations can often prevent escalation.
2. Recognise, Record, Report – Keep a written record (diary sheets are ideal) of ASB incidents. Report non-emergencies to 101 or your local council. In emergencies, always call 999.
3. Request an ASB Case Review – If you’ve reported 3+ incidents in 6 months without resolution, you can request a formal review to bring agencies together and agree on next steps.
