Northern Powergrid works 24/7 to maintain the power network and keep the lights on. If electricity goes off, call 105 and their teams will do everything they can to restore power as quickly as possible. Engineers are available around the clock to respond to faults, severe weather, or planned maintenance. Here are some practical steps to help you stay safe, warm and prepared during a power cut:
Stay Safe and Report Problems
If you see damaged power lines or cables on the ground, stay well clear and do not touch them – they could be live. Call 105 to report it, or 999 in an emergency.
Keep Devices and Essentials Ready
Make sure phones and power banks are charged, and keep torches, blankets, and spare batteries somewhere easy to find. Save 105 in your phone so it’s ready when needed.
Lighting
Keep a torch with spare batteries in an accessible location. Avoid using candles, as they pose a fire risk. Battery-powered or wind-up torches are the safest option.
Heating
Have extra blankets, warm clothing and a hot water bottle ready. If gas heating is used, check if it will still function without electricity. Never use outdoor heaters indoors.
Food & Drink
Stock up on non-perishable food and bottled water. Keep a vacuum flask filled with a hot drink. Limit opening the fridge or freezer to keep food cold for longer.
Electronics
Keep mobile phones fully charged and consider a power bank for backup. Save important contact numbers, including 105.
Animals
Ensure pets and livestock have enough food and water. For heated tanks or aquariums, consider a battery-powered backup or insulation methods.
Stair Lifts
Check if stair lifts have a battery backup. Avoid using them just before a planned power cut to prevent getting stuck mid-way.
