With warm weather here and more on the way, Yorkshire Water is urging residents to use water wisely. The region is officially in a drought, and water usage is expected to surge — by up to 100 million extra litres a day, equivalent to Hull city’s entire daily demand!
Reservoir levels are low, currently at just 61.4%, compared to a typical 84.6% for this time of year. While some rain has fallen, it hasn’t been enough — we need continued rainfall to make a real difference.
What You Can Do:
- Use a watering can, not a hose, and water plants early morning or evening.
- Skip watering the lawn — it will recover when it rains.
- Avoid using pressure washers — use a bucket and clean only where needed.
- Wash your car with a sponge and bucket, not a hose.
- Do full laundry loads on eco-settings.
- Weed regularly — weeds steal water from your plants.
- Choose drought-tolerant plants like lavender and verbena.
- Mulch your beds with bark or compost to retain moisture.

They’ve added 100 new leak team members and are using smart tech to detect and fix leaks faster. If you spot a leak, report it online.
Let’s all do our bit to protect water supplies and support the environment — every drop really does count.
